Vision Statement
A vision statement looks forward and creates a mental image of the ideal state that the organization wishes to achieve.It is inspirational and challenging.
Mission Statement
A mission statement is a declaration of an organization’s “reason for being.” It describes the organization’s purpose and its overall intention. The mission statement supports the vision and serves to communicate purpose and direction to employees, customers, vendors and other stakeholders.
Core Values
Core values reflect the core behaviors or guiding principles that guide the actions of employees as they execute plans to achieve the mission and vision. Core values are the fundamental beliefs of the organization; they really describe or define the culture. Core values are broad statements that guide employees, identifying right and wrong, good and bad, and how to interact with each other and with customers. In the context of management, values are the principles or beliefs that will guide the organization in fulfilling its purpose (achieving its objectives, accomplishing its mission and realizing its vision). For an organization to be successful it needs a common set of shared values.
Management Principles
Management principles or the guiding principles guide the organization through everything it does. They are more prescriptive in nature and are more specific than values.

Vision and mission statements play an important role in strategy development by:
- Providing means to create and weigh various strategic plans and alternatives.
- Laying down the fundamentals of an organization’s identity and defining its purpose for existence.
- Providing an understanding of its business directions.
By identifying and understanding how principles, values, mission, and vision interact with one another, an organization can create a well-designed and successful strategic plan leading to competitive advantage.
